Sea Life Dies and Alcohol Ink on Vellum Technique

Hello Stamping Friends,

Hostess Code through September 15:  WKQ6CJ7R

Stock up on stamps before August 29 when prices go up!  Thanks for the reminder, Joy!

August club cards will be posted separately on this blog so the post is shorter, so check the next post for the Shaded Summer partial die cutting and shaded stamping card.

Before we go to the card let’s look at what is happening this month at Stampin’ Up!

We have a sneak peak of September Paper Pumpkin:

I prepay for a three month subscription to Paper Pumpkin and then activate it now for the September, October and November kits.  Even when one of the kits was Christmas tags, I made cards from the tags and had a nice addition to my Christmas cards. I don’t always use the treat boxes in the September kit but this kit will have instructions to turn the box into a wheelbarrow and we can put our pumpkins, apples and jack-o-lanterns in the wheelbarrow for a nice end table decoration.  Love it!  Click the image above to go to the Paper Pumpkin site or place an order for a prepaid subscription and then activate it whenever you choose. PS – Don’t add your credit card info when you have a prepaid plan, just enter the code they sent to your email.

And if you buy a 3 month subscription, you will get a free $50 Sale A Bration product.  Just saying……

Thanks, Sal, for throwing in that tidbit for getting the most for your dollars.  Sale A Bration runs through the end of September with the opportunity to buy $50 and get a level one product for free or buy $100 and get a level 2 product for free.  Here’s another look at the brochure:

More details HERE.

Sea Life Dies With A Background Of Alcohol Ink On Vellum

This card and technique were inspired by Patty Bennett.

Here is a youtube video for you:

Recipe:

  • Base:  Just Jade, 4 1/4 X 11, scored at 5 1/2
  • Layer 1 (X2):  Misty Moonlight, 4 1/8 X 5 3/8
  • Layer 2 (X2):  Basic White, 4 X 5 1/4
  • Cardstock Vellum:  4 1/4 X 6 (This gives you 3/4″ to trim off after creating your background and 1/4 for trimming edges)
  • Double Back Adhesive Sheet: 41/4 X 6
  • Front Greeting: Basic White, 2 1/2 X 3/4 (I used a ‘Many Messages’ greeting)
  • Seahorse:  Blue Ombre Specialty Paper, 4X2
    • Note:  you will need to fussy cut two tiny sections on the belly and two sections around the fin since this is a partial die
  • Fish (X3): Blue Ombre Specialty Paper, 1 1/2 X 2
  • Seahorse Backing:  Be Dazzling SAB specialty paper, 4 X 2
    • Note:  Cover the back of your 4 X 2 Be Dazzling paper with scotch tape before die cutting
  • Seaweed:  Evening Evergreen Shimmer Vellum, 3 X 2 1/2
  • Easel (X2):  Misty Moonlight, 2 3/4 X 4, score at 2 3/8 and 1 5/8 and then cut with largest hippo die lining up the middle
  • Stampin’ Blends Alcohol Markers:  Lt Misty Moonlight, Lt Night of Navy, Dk Shaded Spruce, Dk Night of Navy
  • Ink:  Shaded Spruce
  • Tools:  Sea Life Dies, Messages Die, Hippo Die for Easel, Medium Tip Water Painter, Basic Black Journaler to dot the eyes
  • 91% Alcohol
  • Stamp Sets: Many Messages, Friends Are Like Seashells
  • Embellishments:  Three Basic Rhinestones

To make an alcohol ink on vellum background  – Prepare your surface.  I have a thin plastic quilting sheet I use.

  • Place a piece of copy paper underneath your vellum to soak up the excess that hits the edges of the vellum
  • Use a small container with a little alcohol in it for dipping your Water Painter
  • Have a paper towel next to the container to clean the Water Painter often so you don’t mix colors
  • Scribble on your vellum:

Place your copier paper under the vellum and dab alcohol one color at a time on the vellum.  Be generous with the alcohol and dab starting with all the Light Misty Moonlight scribbles, then Light Night of Navy, Dark Shaded Spruce and ending by dabbing all the Dark Night of Navy scribbles.  Use your breath or a straw to blow the alcohol so the colors blend.  Blow any excess build up off the edges so you don’t get a solid line at the sides.

Add additional scribbles if you have areas that are ‘blah’ and repeat.

When you are pleased with the result make it a “wow” by dipping your clean brush in the alcohol and then flick the brush on your finger, staying about 6″ over the vellum.  For small bubbles use just a little alcohol and stay a good distance over the vellum, for large bubbles use a little more alcohol in the brush and be closer to the vellum.  Scroll back up to my card front and you will see I have pretty large bubbles and then as the alcohol in the brush ran out the bubbles are smaller.

Let the vellum dry or use the lightest setting on the heat gun to dry the vellum.

Attach the vellum to the double back adhesive sheet, trim to 4″ X 6″ and then cut 3/4″ off the bottom for an inside strip. You should have a 4″ X 5 1/4″ to mount on the Basic White by removing the other side of the double back adhesive.  If you have trouble attaching it squarely to the Basic White just trim the edges after attaching as needed.

The rest of the construction is pretty basic.  I used Tombow liquid glue to attach the seahorse blue top to the Be Dazzling paper.  Before popping up the seahorse with dimensionals I attached the seaweed at the bottom in just a few places with Tombow glue  and then wrapped the seahorse around the left branch I left unattached.  The seahorse, fish and greeting are all popped up with dimensionals.  Don’t forget to dot little black eyes on the seahorse and fish with the Basic Black Journaler.  Since the fish are popped up, the eyes seem to follow you as you move the card – cute!

You’re making that up…..

I guess they’ll just have to make one to see if it’s true.

Remember to add your three rhinestones for more bubbles!

Lastly I added my new type of Easel to the back of the card using the largest of the Hippo Dies.  I cut two and glued them together for a little extra strength since the front was pretty heavy.

I would love to see what you make using this technique.  Post a picture in the comments section!

These dies are beautiful!  Jo Brooks used the large fish die and the ‘Whale Of A Time’ designer series paper to create this card:

Thank you, Jo!

And thank you for spending part of your day with me!  I hope we have been able to bring you a pinch of creativity to spice up your crafting life!

Sale A Bration Round 2 and a new Mini Catalog

Hello Stamping Friends,

Current hostess code:  WRQKTXMA for use if you are a club member or your order is under $150-(that’s where hostess dollars start.)

To launch the new Mini Catalog and the Sale A Bration brochure I held a Caravan party followed by a luncheon.  Thank you to those who were able to participate.

Caravan is a fun card and dice game that is quick to learn and participants change tables so everyone gets to see each other.  There was a prize for the lowest score, the most caravans and the highest score.  The prizes were from the new mini catalog; someone took home a stack of Designer Series Paper, someone won the Merry Melody Embossing folder and last place took home the Wonderful Snowflakes embellishments.  Such fun!!

Do we get to see some pictures?  I doubt the participants would mind.

I’m sure they wouldn’t mind, Sal, but I didn’t take a single picture – not even of the winners holding their prizes.  It was my intent but somehow the intent didn’t pan out!  Check out these prizes, though…..

Whimsy & Wonder Designer Series Paper in 12X12

Iridescent Foil Snowflakes 2 3/8 X 2 3/4

We didn’t have club or the normal zoom and mystery card event in July since we were traveling to Glacier National Park in Montana for an extended vacation.

Surely you have a picture or two of that!??

Dozens!!  Here are two of my favorites.

It is an amazing place!  We saw a few mountain sheep and two bears. We drove the ‘Going to the Sun’ road twice, the first time it was cloudy but we went again and it was a beautiful sunny day.  We took two boat tours – Mary’s Lake and Flathead Lake, a lake outside the park.  I wish we had had time to enjoy Apgar village on the west side, it looked very quaint and  interesting (with an artisan shop) but we were too tired to stop.  There were waterfalls everywhere and the Mary’s Lake boat tour stopped at a little cove and we walked up to a beautiful one:

The first time we drove the Going To The Sun road we went out of the park on the east side and then drove the road that went around the bottom of the park and back to the West entrance where we were camping.  That road has beautiful scenery as well and that is where we saw a bear cross the road.  Add that road to your travels if you are ever there.

Enough about parties and vacationing!  Let’s look at today’s excitement – the new mini catalog goes live and the second round of Sale A Bration starts today!   Click on the catalog images to view the catalogs by pdf – contact me to get a hard copy if you need one.

.

Aren’t you – like – really late in introducing the Mini Catalog.  It says it started in July.

It was supposed to start in July but shipping delays caused such a problem that the home office thought it would be best to launch the catalog one month later.  There are still three items that are delayed and can’t be ordered.

  1. 156326: GINGERBREAD & PEPPERMINT MEMORIES & MORE CARD PACK
  2. 156327: GINGERBREAD & PEPPERMINT MEMORIES & MORE CARDS & ENVELOPES
    • 156275: GINGERBREAD & PEPPERMINT SUITE COLLECTION (ENGLISH)
    • 156719: PAIN D’ÉPICES ET BONBON SUITE COLLECTION (FRENCH)
  3. 156458: BLACKBERRY BEAUTY 12″ X 12″ (30.5 X 30.5 CM) SPECIALTY DESIGNER SERIES PAPER
    • 156278: BLACKBERRY BEAUTY SUITE COLLECTION (ENGLISH)
    • 156725: AUTOUR DES MÛRES SUITE COLLECTION (FRENCH)

I will keep you posted on when those are available.

In the meantime, grab a cuppa something and sit back to enjoy these videos showcasing the suites in the new mini and a close up view of the Sale A Bration offerings!

What about the new people who don’t even know what Sale A Bration is?!

You are so right, Sal!  I jumped right in without explaining our favorite time of the Stampin’ Up! year –Sale A Bration!   In the past Sale A Bration was held for three months from January to March but this year Stampin’ Up! changed the program to be two months, twice a year- the first in January and February and now the second round in August and September.  During Sale A Bration (SAB) you earn free level 1 products with each $50 purchase, and free level 2 products with each $100 purchase.  If you host a party with $300 in sales you earn a free stamp set and if you join during Sale A Bration you get the standard $125 of products for $99 (with free shipping) and you get to choose a bundle of products free!  I will leave the french sets in the images for those of you who might want to send a card to your french speaking friends!

.

During this round of Sale-A-Bration, some products will only be available while supplies last. This means that once they’re gone, they’re gone for good! The Sale-A-Bration products with limited supply include:

  • 156629 Be Dazzling 6″ x 6″ (15.2 x 15.2 cm) Specialty Paper
  • 156600 Sheep Dies
  • 156618 Summer Shadows Dies

All other Sale-A-Bration products will be available throughout the promotion. High demand can send these products into backorder and delay shipping, but the supply will not run out; all orders placed will be honored except for those three products.

I would love to have you on my team of Carin’ Crafters!  Contact me or click HERE for details.

Our next club event is August 10th at 9:30, 1:30 and 6:30.  The 9:30 is full but I have openings at 1:30 and 6:30.   The morning and afternoon classes meet together at 11:30 with a potluck.  Join us as a guest for $5 or a $25 order; however I need RSVPs by noon tomorrow.  If this sounds like fun contact me to join or gather some of your friends for a get together at your house and they may want to start a club.

 Events:

On the second Tuesday, January 12th, at 9:30 AM, you can tune in to my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stampalosopher/videos and I will be creating this month’s club cards.  One card uses the Dandy Garden products and the other uses the Sand and Sea Products.  You won’t want to miss this live stream.

On Tuesday, January 19, at 9:30 AM, I will highlight January’s Paper Pumpkin kit.  (You still have five days to subscribe or purchase a subscription).

On the last Tuesday of the month, January 26, 9:30 AM, I will host a Zoom meeting where you can share cards you’ve made, or cards received in swaps, as well as participate in a Mystery Card challenge.  RSVP on the calendar with your email and you can join the fun!

Hello Stamping Friends,

The Butterfly Duet Punch is back!   #148523, $18, or get the bundle #150599 with the punch and stamp set for $35 – just in time for the last hurrah of Sale A Bration.

The cake punch is also back!

Mom always said “all good things must come to an end” as we left the wonderful vacation we had been on – or the swimming pool -or the horseback trip!  Sigh……  We kept the memories and the pictures to remember the fun, but you have so much more;  you can keep stamps and framelits and ribbons and paper to remember our fun time this last three months with Sale A Bration.

You still have time to put in one last order and get one more free product!  Our hostess code is  KTHPFHPP if your order is under $150.

Let’s look at the brochures one last time:

The ribbon was available around March 4th but sold out immediately.

And my favorite:

The fun isn’t over – it just takes a new venue!  I am hosting a card class with luncheon on Saturday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 16th.  The cost is $20 and we will make 4 specialty cards with product from the Occasions catalog which runs through June 3.  RSVP by April 8th (or sooner)!  You can text, email or click on the calendar on the right side of this blog and the calendar will link you to the Events page at the Stampin’ Up! website where there is a little box for sending me an RSVP.

Let me pick some of my favorite samples from wonderful Stampin’ Up! demonstrators:

Angie Mckenzie used the Country Floral Embossing folder and a sort of spotlight technique:

Brian King used the Botanical Butterfly DSP which has black and white on one side and butterflies on the other:

From “Priscillastamps.blogspot.com”  comes part III of the Lovely Lattice!  I want to visit her blog and find parts 1 and II don’t you?  Stampin’ Up! is encouraging demonstrators to do one simple card for beginners, one for intermediate stampers and one for advanced. This would be the advanced card!

This gorgeous Lasting Lily card comes to us from Frenchie’s Team!  She also used the Country Floral embossing folder.  Her YouTube channel is a definite subscription must!

Thank you, Angie, Brian, Priscilla and Frenchie!   You are an inspiration to all of us.

Our hostess code is  KTHPFHPP.    Click on little SAL waving from the computer to go to the online store –   hurry –  time is of the essence!!

Party Pandas Sale A Bration Free Stamp Set

Hello Stamping Friends,

What a flurry of a month this has been!  Our new grandson, Emmitt, was born January 9!

The Buchholtz family! Big brother, Jaxson, says – “Yay!”

Glad Grandma!
Proud Papa!
Adoring Auntie!

What a miracle is a new little life!  Fun and adventures for all in the future!

Meantime back to business and the cool new products I have to show you.  Today I will feature the Party Pandas stamp set in the Sale A Bration catalog which is free with a $50 order:

I saw this card setup on stampsnlingers.com with the pandas and balloon, then changed the designer series paper and the balloon and the circles and added hearts; so I guess this is a CASE that is copy and selectively edit instead of copy and share everything! What I would recommend with this stamp set is doing what I did here with the panda’s eyes to make them friendlier.  I used a white gel pen to increase the size of the whites and then made a bigger black dot in the middle of the white.  I thought the eyes were too beady.  Can you tell a difference?

The Designer Series Paper is Pop of Pink which is in the clearance rack for only $3.90 but it won’t last long because it is perfect for Valentines as you can see with the heart paper I used above. Click on the image to visit the clearance rack.

  • Base of the card:  Melon Mambo  5 1/2″  X  8 1/2″  Scored at 4 1/4″
  • 1st Layer:  Whisper White   4″ X  5 1/4″   make two so you have one for the inside
  • Top Layer:  Designer Series Paper (DSP)  3 3/4″  X  5″
  • From the DSP punch a balloon for the inside – Balloon Bouquet Punch #140609, page 207
  • From a scrap of Melon Mambo punch a balloon for the front, sponge the edges and use a white gel pen for the line
  • With the Big Shot, cut two Melon Mambo 1 7/8″ Stitched Shape Circle Framelits and two Whisper White same size
  • Melon Mambo 4 x 4 and Whisper White 4 x 4 needed for the circles, they are offset and pink on white then white on pink
  • Whisper White 2 1/2″  X  4″  for stamping the two pandas with Tuxedo black, color the circles in the hat and then fussy cut
  • Stamp Happy Birthday on Whisper White Scrap and cut with the Bunch of Banners framelit
  • The hearts are from the Brights Enamel Shapes on page 196 of the Annual Catalog #141680
  • The Baker’s Twine I used is retired but there is solid white #124262 or black and white striped  #134576  on page 199.  Trick:  to adhere your Baker’s Twine, position the twine, put a small dab of liquid Tombow on a scrap of paper, slightly lift the twine and slide the scrap with the glue under the twine, let the twine absorb a little glue then remove the scrap.  No mess!
  • Melon Mambo Marker and Black Marker were used to add a little line on the balloon to look like a tie from the twine
  • The inside greeting comes from the Ribbon of Courage stamp set page 96, the confetti is from Party Pandas

Ribbon of Courage in clear mount is $19, the Balloon Punch is $18, The DSP is $3.90, the Enamel Shapes are $9.00 and twine is $3.00 so you can reach your $50 with those purchases and get the Party Pandas for free!!

One of the free Sale A Bration stamp sets is called “Hey, Chick” and Evelyn Bicknell from Melbourne, Australia created a pocket card using the stamp set that is awesome!  She also sent a pdf instruction sheet so you can create your own Hey Chick card.  Check this out chickies:

Window Shopping Bundle!

Hurry Stamping Friends,

Don’t let the Window Shopping Bundle get away!  It is on page 43 of the Occasions catalog and is just the cutest!  It might get carried over in the big catalog come June 1st, however when Stampin’ Up! introduces a product with matching Thinlits it is bundled with 10% savings but not when it is carried over to the next catalog.  The bundle is $50.25 which will qualify you for a free Sale A Bration product.

Remember, purchase $50 of anything from any catalog and get one item from Sale A Bration for free.  Three additional items were introduced February 21:

Check out the sample items made with these products:

Click on the brochure picture below to see all the other Sale A Bration products.  But hurry the Card Tin is already sold out and product is only available while supplies last!

Thank you, Deana, for a wonderful party to introduce the Window Shopping bundle and the Sale A Bration products.

Our project at the party was either a Birthday Box with matching card which uses the Window Shopping stamp set:

or a Thinking of You box and matching card:

Notice the banners use the Delicate Details free stamp set from Sale A Bration:

The Emerald Envy box uses the third one down and the Dapper Denim box uses the second one down to be a bit more masculine.  The flower and cupcake on the edges of the banner are part of the Window Box stamp set!  The banner uses a 5 1/2″  X  7/8 inch piece of card stock and the little Thinlit from the set that scores and cuts the end!  The video below will show that in detail.

For a thank you gift, I used the same Window Shopping Bundle and made a little St. Patrick’s Day basket.

Hmmm…. It did have chocolate in it at one time; at least the tea light and mints are still there for the picture. I used Cucumber Crush paper and the Mint Macaron ribbon which is still in the Clearance Rack.  Why a tea light?  Because the door prize was a tea light holder made with Watermelon Wonder card stock:

To make the tealight you use two pieces of the main Thinlit just as you do for the box:

Remember the middle heart is directional so punch your windows accordingly.

I demonstrated the basket pieces with the same color.  You only need one piece of the main box Thinlit for the basket and one piece 8 1/2 X 3/4 for the handle:

The Thinlit set makes a basket just perfect for a little Easter gift!

The regular box uses two Thinlit cutouts which fit nicely on a 6 X 11 piece of paper:

The home office has a wonderful video for construction of the box so rather than recreate the wheel I will insert it here.  If you are viewing this on your smartphone you may need to click on the little SAL image at the top of the post to go to the main blog where videos work.

Drum roll please:  Presenting The Window Box Thinlit dies:

One more quick note – check the bottom of your Big Shot machine once in awhile.  The bottom screws need to be kept tightened as well as the screw on the handle.  The machine comes with a little tool to keep the handle tightened but you will need a phillips screw driver to tighten the bottom screws.

Cheerio but be back soon!   (I just went to the high school’s performance of Oliver.  It was exceptional and I can’t get the songs out of my mind- but who would want too?!)
